Review: Achieving Big Hair with Bumble & Bumble Pret-a-Powder

While many of you may brandish the straightening irons on a daily basis, my days of sleek, smooth locks are long gone. I'm not saying that every day is a bad hair day - though I definitely have my fair share of those - but that nowadays, I'd much rather plump for bouncy, voluminous hair with a bit of a wave or a curl.

Achieving lasting volume is no mean feat. Over the years, I've tried root-boosting sprays, mousses and powders alike, but the goal has never quite been in easy reach. Many of them - much like my hair - fell flat, leaving my hair limp and crispy with product. Or worse still, they left me with greasy-looking locks, despite having just stepped out of the shower. The closest I ever came to success was the TreSemme plumping powder, which when sprinkled into the roots and rubbed in, gave me the big hair I'd always dreamed of. It wasn't long, however, until my hair began to feel sticky and greasy, so much so that I'd race straight to the shower each evening after work to wash it out. So, it's fair to say that when the Bumble & Bumble Pret-a-Powder came onto my radar, I wasn't exactly racing to Boots, eager to join the queue.

Months later, things changed, and after hearing a torrent of complimentary conversations about the hair powder, I finally caved and bought it.

Bumble & Bumble Pret-a-Powder claims to be equal parts dry shampoo, style extender and volume, which immediately sets it apart from the other hair powders on the market. Priced at £21.50 for 56g, it's far from cheap, but given that you get the benefits of oil absorbency and volume all in one, it's a product that's worth a few moments of any beauty lover's time. If, like me, you are still putting off learning to blow dry your hair properly, or like most of us, you simply don't have the time, then Pret-a-Powder will be your best friend, adding extra oomph to lacklustre locks, and filling in the gaps between washes. 

To use, I sprinkle liberally through my roots and massage in with my fingertips, and hey presto, big hair is mine. You can use a fair amount of product before you start to look as though you've been antiqued, which means that you can go a little bit crazy in your bid for extra oomph, should your style require it.

While I don't find the volume this provides to last all day per-se, all it takes is a quick scrunch of the roots to get things looking as they should again. I tend to do this several times throughout the day, and never find it necessary to apply any more product once my hair is styled. Pret-a-Powder does an excellent job of freshening up day-old hair, and I keep a bottle in my handbag for those moments when you catch sight of yourself in the mirror and have a sudden urge to run home and start again.

In spite of the price, this has become a hair-styling staple for me, and although the bottle is a little bit on the small side, it seems to last a remarkably long time. It's ideal for anyone with oily, fine or lacklustre hair, and it definitely gets the seal of approval from me.

Hair Heroes..?

My hair can be a handful at the best of times, but with the cold weather drawing in, my poor, dried-out ends are in need of an extra boost..or three. So lately, I've been concentrating my (minimal) beauty-related shopping efforts on picking up a couple of helping hands for my dehydrated locks, the first and most notable of which being the Charles Worthington Salon at Home Secrets Collection Moisture Seal Intense Rescue Melting Balm (phew! Longest name ever!?) Thick and waxy in texture, this emulsifies into an oil when rubbed between the hands, and is spread generously through dry hair. Leave for twenty minutes and then wash and condition as normal, and hey presto - soft, bouncy, healthy-looking hair. Yes, I'm fully aware that I sound like a shampoo advert, but this little pot of magic really is something.

Next up, I've been brandishing this little Bumble & Bumble duo when styling my bonce (!) The Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hairspray (£7.50 for 50ml) is spritzed on generously and combed through while hair is damp, while the Shine On Finishing Spray is misted over the hair once styled for a glossier finish.

Now I may be about to shock some of you, given the fantastic reputation this stuff has, but I'm not at all convinced the Thickening Hairspray is all it's cracked up to be. In fact, I can't determine any notable difference between when I have and haven't used it.  I'm definitely glad I picked up the miniature version rather than immediately splurging £22 on the full-size! Bumble & Bumble do, however, recommend that this is layered up over their Tonic Lotion for best results, so it's a toss-up between giving that a go or shelving my spray for good.

As for the Shine On, this one does the job and makes a lovely finishing spray with a pleasant scent.  Used sparingly, it gives me a polished look which is perfect for the party season.

Review: Dove Nourishing Oil Care Express Treatment Conditioner

In the past, I'll admit to having been a bit of a snob when it comes to haircare. Bar Aussie, I have always assumed that the higher-end salon brands were where it was at if you really wanted to take care of your tresses, and a while back I stocked up on many a treatment to pamper my dry, damaged ends, post-ombre.

But truth be told, many of those were disappointments, and I was left feeling dismayed at having spent my hard-earned pennies on something that wasn't up to scratch. After that, I resolved to give the high-street brands I could find in the supermarket a fairer hearing, and one of the products that I have found along the way is the Dove Nourishing Oil Care Express Treatment Conditioner (mine is called the Daily Treatment Conditioner as I picked it up abroad).

With 3x the nourishing power of a standard conditioner, this offers the benefits of a richer treatment mask in the form of a practical daily conditioner. Salon-smooth locks in just one minute a day? Sounds pretty good, doesn't it. 

The weightless nutri-oils - a  revolutionary lightweight blend of argan, coconut and almond oils - soak rapidly into the hair, providing super-doses of vitamins E and F to leave locks soft, amooth, shiny and full of life.

I started using this straight after I re-ombred my hair at home, and was expecting my ends to be dry, brittle and frizzy, but after slapping this on and wrapping my hair in a towel for a good ten minutes (I know, it defeats the object of it being an 'express' treatment, but the longer the better when your hair has spent the last hour soaked in peroxide, in my eyes!) Review: Joico K-Pak Essential Travel Kit

As I have perpetually dry ends to my hair, I'm constantly on the look-out for helping hands, and my hair is one tough customer. There are not many products that it tends to absorb very well, so any effects tend to be pretty short-lived. On my hunt for a solution, I recently decided to purchase the Joico K-Pak Essential Travel Kit, which contains a couple of 50ml bottles of the K-Pak Reconstruct shampoo and conditioner, and a 50ml tube of  the K-Pak Revitaluxe. I thought this would be a great way for me to trial the range before investing in full-size bottles, as doing that there is always the risk of disappointment.

Enriched with Joico's unique keratine silicone complex, the K-Pak Reconstructor Shampoo is of  a rich, creamy consistency, designed to begin the reconstruction process. It restores weak and depleted hair to its optimal strenghth and condition by replenishing amino acids and filling in damaged areas of the cuticle, as well as hydrating and protecting with aloe and vitamin E. It smells really lovely - that classic 'just stepped out of the salon' scent, lathers nicely and leaves my hair feeling clean and soft. The K-Pak Reconstructor Conditioner has the same lovely scent and is designed to strengthen, detangle and reconstruct the hair., leaving it bouncy, silky and soft. The instructions recommend leaving this on for just one minute, but that just isn't enough for my long, damaged hair, so I tend to go for the standard three minutes (or more), and used in conjunction with the shampoo my hair is smoother and more controllable.

The real star of the set, though, is the K-Pak Revitaluxe Bio-Advanced Restorative Treatment. This touts itself as a luxurious treatment which is able to correct years of damage, while also preventing future damage - quite a bold claim, I'd say. The Keratine Peptide complex is said to double the hair's resistance to breakage, while protecting against colour fade up to 94% (great for my ombre hair). Revitaluxe has a cumulative effect, meaning that the more you use it, the shinier, stronger and healthier your hair becomes - so it's not a quick fix, but should have lasting results.

 I was quite thrown by this product at first, as it's extremely watery rather than the thick cream I was expecting. This does make it a little bit fiddly to apply in the shower, as it's easy to spill the product after you've squeezed out what you need - you really need to pop the lid back on straight away. It also smells exactly like those little purple Parma-Violet sweets which were popular back when I was a child - does anyone remember them? Personally I like the scent, so it's only a bonus for me. It's to be left on for 3-5 minutes once or twice a week, and I tend to do this in between the shampoo and conditioner stages.

Over time, I've noticed a vast improvement in the condition of my hair after using this - it's stronger, smoother, silkier and shinier. However, it hasn't completely put paid to problems like split ends, which I'm still suffering from to some degree.

Unfortunately the shampoo and conditioner only lasted a few washes, but the Revitaluxe is still going strong after a couple of months as you only need a small amount due to it's thin consistency.

I'm going to be repurchasing all three of these, as when used in conjunction with one another they definitely give the best results, and have made a bigger difference to my hair than anything else I've tried (although I'm still liking the L'oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil mask for in between). I'm also planning on trying out some of the Tigi S-Factor range, as I've heard good things about that too. Have you tried it?

Review: L'oreal Professionel Mythic Oil Hair Masque

I'd heard lots of good things about the L'oreal Mythic Oil, and being a fan of the very similar Extraordinary Oil, which I use on my damp locks every time after I've washed my hair to help tame frizz and keep them looking smooth, I was excited to try the L'oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil Hair Masque.

The masque, which is suitable for all hair types, aims to transform the condition of the hair in just three minutes, leaving it glossy, nourished and soft to the touch. With an enriched formula of argan, avocado, cottonseed and grapeseed oil blends, it does its best to replenish tired, dull and lifeless hair and get it looking back to its best.

Personally, I've suffered quite a lot with dry and damaged hair since originally having it ombred early last year, so I was really looking for a treatment that would help to soften up my ends and put some oomph back into my locks. So far, nothing I'd tried had made a major impact, and any improvements I had noticed were short-lived, as my ends were soon back to looking pretty dry and frazzled.

The treatment comes in a plastic tub with a screw top, making it easily accessible when in the shower or bath (and no worries about any product getting stuck in the bottom and going to waste). It's a thick, creamy and dense in consistency, making it feel quite luxurious, and it spreads easily and distributes evenly when combed through the hair or run through with the fingers.

While wet, the hair feels like silk, and while it did leave my hair feeling in better condition after the first use, I couldn't help but think that three minutes wasn't enough time for a deep-conditioning product to really do its work. After playing around with it a little bit and experimenting with leaving it on for longer and using it more often, I've found that I get the best results when I stick to roughly the recommended three minutes, but use it more regularly as a normal conditioner rather than just once or twice a week. It's definitely made my hair softer and more manageable, and along with a couple of other hair products I've been using it has really helped to combat that dryness. I'd say that the effect has been cumulative, as it does seem to have improved over time.

Quick Review: Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque

I'm always on the look-out for something to whip my dry, damaged hair back into shape. Nobody wants to have to walk around with a dull, frizzy mop of hair now, do they?

I've heard so many good things about the Macadamia range across the bloggosphere, and about a year ago there was something of a craze for this line, particularly the Deep Repair Masque. But as I was getting on just fine with my hair at the time, I didn't really take much notice.

Fast-forward a year, and I'm in dire need, having tried and cast aside many a deep conditioning treatment since having my hair ombred around eight months ago. So, rather than fork out for a whole tub of this stuff and risk further disappointment, I decided to order a few sachets from Ebay and see what all the fuss was about.

Enriched with macadamia and Argan oils, this deeply nourishing mask claims to provide locks with long-lasting conditioning, as well as penetrating and rebuilding damaged hair, improving shine and elasticity. Tea-tree oil, chamomile oil and algae also give the hair a rejuvenating boost.

I spread this generously through my hair from the mid-lengths down to the ends, avoiding the roots and combing through with a wide-toothed comb for even distribution. It's recommended that you leave it on for seven minutes, but having now made my way through a few sachets, I've experimented with this a bit to see if the results would differ. It's thick and creamy in texture, and has a lovely salon smell, making it a pleasure to pop on while having a nice relaxing bath.

One sachet is enough for about three treatments, which I thought was pretty good. The masque is available in three different sizes from the Macadamia Hair website - 100ml (£12.50), 250ml (£23.95) and 500ml (36.75). I think it's great that they have these options, as if you know that it works for you then you can save money by buying a larger tub. Equally, you can try out a smaller one if you are unsure, without investing too much money, although I do think it's a shame the sachets aren's available as they are on the US website (here) for just $4. Still, there is always Ebay.

So, what did I think?

Well, unfortunately this did absolutely nothing for me. My hair felt vaguely conditioned, as it would do from using any standard conditioner, but there was no softness, shine or bounce, and the ends of my hair were still just as frizzy when they dried. As I mentioned before, I did give this numerouse goes, but sadly it has failed to impress me.

Having said this, I know that this product has something of a cult following, so as always, it just goes to show that different things work well for different people. I'm actually beginning to wonder whether there is a product out there that can penetrate my locks and do some sort of good at all, or if it is just beyond help. I've recently had the ends chopped, but it hasn't made a huge difference to the condition.

Products That Didn't Float My Boat #1: Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Intense Moisturising Treatment

When I first had my hair ombred, as I'm sure you've heard me mention before by now, the ends became really dry, brittle and unruly. When I went on a bit of a haircare spree, this was one of the products I popped into my bag in the hope that it would restore the lustre to my wayward locks, leaving me with a silky, smooth, hydrated mane.

Sadly, it wasn't to be. The first time I used this mask, I excused it's performance, explaining it away with the fact that my hair was in such terrible condition that it had a mammoth job to do, and that it couldn't possible repair the damage all in one go. So, I decided to give it a second chance.

A little bit about the product before I go into my experiences.

Containing Argan oil, which is present in many a best-selling hair product at the moment, this mask aims to 'penetrate the hair shaft, restoring shine and softness, while strengthening and creating soft, seductive, silky perfection', as proclaimed on the packaging.

Now, I hate to be so negative, but for me, the most important thing when writing a review is to be honest. I don't wish to denounce Organix as a brand, and I actually enjoy using their Nourishing Coconut Milk leave-in conditioner on a daily basis (review coming up shortly). But this mask really didn't do anything for me, and sadly, it left my hair in a sorrier state than it had been beforehand. My hair felt coarse and dry, but the real killer was that it left my hair in a huge matted mess. I had never seen my hair in such a condition before, and it took me a good couple of hours to untangle the mess, even having to cut bits out where it was beyond help. I actually saw a similar such review of this product on Makeupalley, and I remember thinking at the time how ridiculously negative and dramatic some people could be. It's only having used it that I am able to understand where they were coming from.

 However, as with all products, what doesn't work for one person sometimes proves to be an absolute gem for another, and vice versa, and I did see plenty of positive reviews on this, too. I'm really not sure why my hair didn't get along with it, so I'd love to know if any of you have tried it, and if so what your thoughts were. I'd be really interested to hear if you've had a positive experience with it.

Final rating:   I feel bad, but given my experience I really couldn't give this one many points. I do like the packaging and branding though, so for that this scores a 2/10.

Haircare Hits and Misses for Dry/Damaged Hair

Last weekend, I posted a Youtube video on my current haircare routine, so now it's time to follow that up with a detailed post for those of you who aren't keen on watching videos. I've also added in some extra products I have been using of late, that didn't feature, so hopefully even if you have already seen the video there will be something for you in this post. 

I've had dry hair for what seems like an age now, and had tried various different deep conditioners and DIY hair masks, but nothing could ever quite cut the mustard. So, when I had my hair coloured earlier this month, which left me with pretty frazzled, dry and frizzy ends, I decided that it was time to invest in some proper, decent haircare in order to nurse my poor locks back to health. So, I will talk you through the new additions to my routine, letting you know my thoughts on them so far, and finish up with some old trusties that I've been using for a while now.

Redken Extreme Shampoo

This was the first product I went out and bought, having done my research and read that it was excellent for brittle, damaged ends like mine. It's designed to put the protein lost during the lightening process back into your hair, therefore providing the hair with what it needs to become strong and healthy. It smells a fair bit like Calpol, and lathers up really well. I can't really say what results this alone has given me so far, as I have been using it in conjunction with lots of other new products, but I do know that it leaves my hair feeling really thick and clean when I have just rinsed it out.

Redken All Soft Conditioner

This stuff is fantastic. It smells like honey, and as soon as I start to massage it into the ends of my hair, I can almost feel them relax! My hair suddenly starts to feel smooth, supple and silky, which I love! I think this has probably been the biggest saviour of my hair so far. It was the last thing to be added into my routine, and it was then that I started to notice more of a difference in the condition of my hair.

Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy Conditioner

Now, a couple of weeks ago I was all ready to review this and say it was useless, but I'm glad I waited as I am now finding myself quite liking it. When I used it on my hair before it had been coloured, it seemed fine, though nothing special. But when I had had it coloured, this conditioner didn't seem to do anything for my hair. I now think that my locks were just in such bad condition that it was too big a job for this product, but now that my hair has got some strength back it seems to be responding better. This makes it feel nice and silky in the shower, though I still need to follow up with other product when I get out if I don't want to end up with a tangled barnet. Again though, I put this down to the sorry condition my hair has been in, as I find the same regardless of what I've used.

Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Intense Moisturising Treatment

Now, I'm going to be honest about this one. It's not for me. That's not to say that it won't work for other people, but this honestly leaves my hair in a tangled, matted mess - far worse than it has ever been before. I really can't understand how it could have that effect, but it does - either that, or my hair becomes matted when shampooing and this just doesn't do the job it should do afterwards. Either way, I have found this product disappointing and won't be repurchasing.

Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Leave-In Treatment

This one has been another great saviour, as it's the only thing I can put in my hair that gets rid of the tangles and knots. I work a couple of pumps-worth through towel-dried hair, and it just makes it SO much easier to brush through. This is also, like the Extreme shampoo, designed to put protein back into your hair, strengthening it and preventing it from breaking off. I must say, my hair seems much stronger since I started using this, and I haven't noticed any more split ends.

Organix Coconut Milk Leave-In Nourishing Milk

This is basically a leave-in conditioner, and it smells ah-mazing (funnily enough, like coconut milk). I carry this around with me in my bag and spritz it through my hair whenever it's starting to look a bit parched, as a bit of a refresher, and it seems to be quite nourishing. I really like the idea of using something extra in my hair after it's been washed and conditioned, as it makes me feel more confident that my hair is getting everything it needs throughout the day. Plus it smells like holidays.

John Frieda Luxurious Volume Volume Refresher

This little spray claims to revivve volume when hair falls flat, and it certainly does that. Plus, it's a dry shampoo, so what's not to love? This is another one that comes with me in my handbag, and it's great for freshening up your fringe if you have one, like I do. I always find that my fringe is the first thing to go lank or oily, and given that it's also the first thing people see when they look at me, I like to keep it looking clean and fresh!

So, those are all the new additions to my haircare routine. Now onto some that have been around a bit longer.

Tresemme 24 Hour Body Root Boosting Spray

I've got quite a lot of hair, but it is quite fine, so I need all the help I can get when it comes to volume. I spray this through my roots before blow-drying for some extra lift

L'oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil

If you saw my review on this one a couple of months ago then you'll know that I was dead against hair oils before this. I'd tried one in the past, and had hated it, feeling that it weighed my hair down and left it looking greasy. But having heard many a rave review on this stuff, I decided to give oils one last try, and I'm glad I did. I actually run a couple of pumps of this through my hair before drying it, and I really find that it helps keep my hair looking smooth and frizz-free, which has been a godsend for my frazzled ends. I also tend to smooth a bit of this on later in the day, if my locks are starting to look a bit unruly. One important thing to remember with this though, is to avoid your roots and your fringe like the plague!

Tresemme 24 Hour Body Sky High Plumping Powder

I actually don't use this one very often. While it's great at giving my roots a boost and helping me to achieve big hair, using it means my hair is in need of a wash again much sooner than it otherwise would be, so I tend to save this for special occasions. It's basically a powder that you rub into your roots and voila. It does leave my hair feeling a bit sticky though, and needs to be used sparingly.

New Video: Current Haircare Routine - Nursing Damaged Hair Back to Health

Hello lovelies, hope you're all having a great weekend. I've been a bit quiet on the blog this week, and on Youtube for the past couple, but now that I've finished work for Christmas and have got some time off, I'm raring to get some posts written and videos filmed!

Today's video is about my current haircare routine. I've recently had to invest in some new haircare as my hair became really dry, brittle and damaged after having it ombred. It really was in a poor state, but thankfully some of these products have made a huge difference. Equally, some haven't, so I thought I'd talk you through what I've been using and my thoughts on each.

I will be writing up a full blog post on my haircare routine within the next week as I'm aware that videos are not for everyone, so keep your eyes open for that if this is not your cup of tea. I'll also be doing full reviews on each of the products.

L'oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil

I have always been reluctant to use oil on my hair. When I first started hearing about people doing so, I thought they were mad, imagining that it would turn their locks into a greasy oil slick rather than do any good.

The first time I relented and tried Argan oil on my hair, my suspicions were confirmed - I applied it to the ends of dry hair, as instructed, and sure enough, my barnet soon became an oily mop. After that, I decided not to dabble in using such products again.

That was, until I heard about the L'oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil (please excuse the fact that mine's a foreign version - it is exactly the same thing), Glowing review after glowing review persuaded me to give hair oils one more go, especially after reading time and again that this one did not weigh down your locks.

This oil can be applied as a pre-wash treatment (massage it into your hair and leave it for an hour or two, before washing as normal), or can be applied to wet or dry hair. Having had a bad experience applying to dry hair in the past, I thought I would give the wet hair option a try, and I'm glad I did.

One or two pumps is enough, even for long hair - with hair oils, less really is more. Just run it through, from mid length right down to the ends, avoiding the roots (and fringe, if you have one), and blow-dry your hair, just as you normally would.

It really is true that this oil doesn't leave the hair feeling heavy or greasy. Instead, it leaves me with soft, smooth locks that are much more manageable than usual. My hair is really quite dry at the moment, and while this doesn't leave me looking as though I've just stepped out of a salon, it's not all that far off. My hair is in dire need of a good cut, so it's more of a challenge for this product than most people's hair, I think!

I do sometimes use the oil to tame fly-aways once my hair is dry, but in this instance I would use the tiniest little amount, as it does seems to leave more of a coating on the hair when used in this way.

I now use this oil on my hair regularly - after washing and before drying - and am really enjoying the difference it makes to the condition of my hair.
